Segment No. 088 -- Mt. 17:22,23; Mk. 9:30-32; Lk. 9:43-45

Title:  The Second Prophecy of Yeshua's Death and Resurrection

Lk. 9:43a   And they were all amazed at the majesty of God.

Mt. 17:22a   Now while they were staying in Galilee,
Mk. 9:30   Then they departed from there and passed through Galilee, and He did not want anyone to know it.

He is preparing the training of the twelve, and as much as possible now, stays out of the public eye.

Lk. 9:43b   But while everyone marveled at the things which Jesus did, He said to His disciples,

Mt. 17:22b   Jesus said to them, “The Son of Man is about to be betrayed into the hands of men.”
Mk. 9:31a   For He taught His disciples and said to them, “The Son of Man is being delivered into the hands of men,
Lk. 9:44   “Let these words sink down into your ears, for the Son of Man is about to be delivered into the hands of men.”

The idiom “lay (or let) in the ears” is found only one time in the O.T. — in Exodus 17:14.  “Put in the ears of” or “repeat in the hearing” of a person implies more than just “reading” or “repeating” in the hearing of a person.  Undoubtedly this idiom also carries the added emphasis: “Listen carefully and remember well, for what you are about to hear is very important.”  Yeshua prefaces His words with an expression found in the O.T. because it brings to mind the promise and/or warning God gave to Joshua.  Yeshua wants to prepare His disciples for the persecution they will face after He is repudiated by the Jewish leaders and then executed as a criminal.  At the same time, He wishes to encourage the disciples by assuring them of His victory.

Mt. 17:23a   “And they will kill Him, and on the third day He will be raised up.”
Mk. 9:31b   “And they will kill Him, and after He is killed, He will rise on the third day.”

Mt. 17:23b   And they were exceedingly sorrowful.
Mk. 9:32   But they did not understand this saying and were afraid to ask Him.
Lk. 9:45   But they did not understand this saying, and it was hidden from them so that they did not perceive it; and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.

What the disciples are to learn must be learned gradually.  His death and resurrection are a heavy subject to deal with.
