Segment No. 098 -- John 8:12-20

Title:  The Light of the World

Jn. 8:12   Then Yeshua spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world.  He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of  life.”

In rabbinic literature, “Light of the world” is another name for the Messiah (Abah Rabbati 8:4).

In segment #098 and #099 together we have the fifth of Yochanan’s seven discourses, the discourse on the light of the world.  Also in this segment we have the second of Yochanan’s seven “I am’s,” “I am the light of the world.”  Also, we have evidence of Yochanan’s sub-theme, the conflict between light and darkness

Jn. 8:13   The Pharisees therefore said to Him, “You bear witness of yourself; Your witness is not true.”
Jn. 8:14   Jesus answered and said to them, “Even if I bear witness of Myself, My witness is true, for I know where I came from and where I am going; but you do not know where I come from and where I am going.”
Jn. 8:15   “You judge according to the flesh; I judge no one.”
Jn. 8:16   “And yet if I judge, My judgment is true; for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent Me.”
Jn. 8:17   “It is written in your Law that the testimony of two men is true.”
Jn. 8:18   “I am the One who bears witness of Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness of Me.”

In response to their challenge, Yeshua tells them three things.  First of all, His testimony is true by virtue of His divine origin.  Secondly, their judgment is false because they do not know the Father.  And thirdly, He has the two witnesses required by the Mosaic Law (Deut. 17:6; 19:15) — Himself and the Father.

Jn. 8:19   Then they said to Him, “Where is Your Father?”  Yeshua answered, “You know neither Me or My Father.  If you had known Me, you would have known My Father also.”
Jn. 8:20   These words Yeshua spoke in the Treasury, as He taught in the Temple; but no one laid hands on Him, for His hour had not yet come.

The treasury was located in the Women’s Court of the Temple, and was the place of the Freewill Offering for the Temple.
