Lk. 10:38 Now it happened as they went that He entered a certain village; and a certain woman
This is not the first time that Yeshua has came in contact with Mary and her sister Martha. In Luke 7:38 we read about a woman who came to Yeshua while He was eating in a Pharisee’s house, washed His feet with her tears, and then dried them with her hair. According to John 11:1, This woman was Mary, Martha’s sister. These two women were the sisters of Lazarus. The Bible does not go into detail, but evidently a close relationship developed between Jesus and this family over time.

Lk. 10:39 And she had a sister, called Mary, who also sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His words.
Mary was doing what a typical disciple of the period would do. M:Avoth 1:4 says, “Let thy house be a meeting house for the wise and sit amid the dust of their feet and drink in their words with thirst.”

Lk. 10:40 But Martha was distracted with much serving, and she approached Him and said, “Lord, do You not care that my sister has left me to serve alone?”
Lk. 10:41 And Jesus answered and said to her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and
troubled about many things.”
Lk. 10:42 “But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen the good part, which will not be taken away from her.”
Two verses from the Mishnah tell us the importance of Yeshua’s words here. M:Avoth 2:8a says, “Rabban Yochanan ben Zakkai received the tradition from Hillel and Shammai. He used to say, if thou has learned much Law, ascribe no merit to thyself, for there unto was thou created.” M:Avoth 4:10 says, “R. Meir said, decrease thy labors in worldly advocations and occupy thyself in the Law; and be humble of spirit before all men; and if thou neglect the Law, many things to disregard it shall present themselves to thee, but if thou toil in the Law, He has abundant reward for thee.”
